Basses

Top left: Maya Jazz Bass, a very light weight bass with a super-fast neck, there was a high output Dimarzio pick-up in the Bridge position, giving a harsh rough sound. The other Pick-up was original, giving a much warmer sound. I bought it from a friend when I  became interested in bass playing alongside Guitarplaying. It was used on the first Kriziz recordings and gigs. I sold it to my ex-girlfriend who insisted paying me for it. Top right: Yamaha 1200 S Bass, a very heavy top quality Bass with a through neck. I played it as a sort of endorsement deal. The Bass was for sale from a store I visited often. I played it during the final gigs on the 'No Pope' Tour. On this picture The Fender bassman 135 amplifier is also visible in the background. To the right: Ibanez Musician LE Bass, Also a quality Bassguitar with a through-neck. Saint Vitus Bassist Peter de Bye (on keyboards in the picture) owned it. I played it during 'You keep on Walking' on the Saint Vitus 'Please Stop' Tour, when Peter had a keyboard-part. The amp was a Peavey hooked to to a Bass-bin from a former P.A. system.

Hofner 182 E2 solid Bass Guitar 1963,  also a very lightweight, very fast playing, medium scale bass. I traded in a Roland TR 909 drumcomputer to purchase this Bass. I used it through the Kriziz reunion period. Surprisingly it gave a deep warm sound, and it was possible to do slapping parts on it. It is a typical '60s European Bass with a vague Fender look to it. It has a red vinyl coating on it. A big problem was getting strings for it in the 90s, longscale or shortscale don't fit the bass and mediumscale I had to import via the UK. At the moment this bass is with my eldest Son. For an Amplifier I used a Stage 100 combo amp with a D.I., although in this picture there seems to be a Peavey Bassamp with cabinet in use. I can't remember ever having one.

To the right: Fender Fretless Precision Bass.

Fretless bassplaying started on this bass. This particular bass is believed to be used for the Kerozinekikkers 'Kwaak' album from 2002. As stated on the sleeve the Bass was however played by Lesley, their Keyboardplayer. This picture, however is from the sessions for that album and therefore raises the question whether I might have played some bass on 'Kwaak' besides the Guitarplaying, sometimes up to three parts per song. I did play some bass but I don't know if it was recorded.

To the right: Washburn Fretless Bass. This Bass, my best friend Jan let me lent it. It took a while to feel comfortable with the instrument but playing fretless isn't as hard as I thought it would be. I am using it for all my recordings from about 2014 onwards. Most of the time it's signal goes straight into the board giving a very direct sound. Another reason to intonate with your ears instead of you eyes, although the dots on the binding of the neck do indicate roughly were to put your fingers.
